Part two of my Instagram series…
Instagram would be one of the most favoured social media sites in the quilty world. It is photo based and quilters are very visual people so it makes sense that quilters and quilting images are flooding IG.
IG is an app that you can download onto your phone. You can then take a quick photo, write a comment and share it. It is more than that though it becomes part of your community. Below are the step by steps to setting up your own IG account.
Step 1
Install the app and set up your profile. Pick a name that people already associate with you so that they can find you – such as a blog name. Fill out a description so people know who you are and what you are about. Add a profile picture.
Step 2
Choose public or private – but if you are trying to promote/share your quilty self, choose public so you can develop a presence.
Step 3
Now you can start. Find some people to follow and like/comment on the pictures. Check out who they follow and you might like to follow some of the same people. You can follow bloggers, fabric stores, fabric designers etc.
When you are reading blogs and magazines you may see a @xxx this is an Instagram name/account. Just look up the name and another person to follow becomes available. Everything that people post will who up in you news feed. If you see something you like the heart icon or double tap the photo. If you really like the photo comment or ask a question. We all love feedback and questions on our work.
Step 4
Set up some of your own photos. Take a photo, you can crop, filter and add effects then share to IG. Ass a caption/comment. Add some hashtags (#). Hashtags are how your picture gets filed on IG. Click on you # or others and you can see projects, ideas, concepts all belonging to that hashtag – super awesome.
I often check out #greataussiedestash for fabric finds and recently #quiltcon2016 and #tokyoquilt for ideas from two amazing overseas quilt show that I wouldn’t get the chance to attend.
IG helps you to share you WIPs and display when they are finished. You can even ask for input into you quilt.
You can tag people you want to see something you have posted. Example @katja-marek for thenewhexagonproject. The best bit is when they comment back and give you feedback. Quilting celebrities noticing you!
You IG account will give you what you put into it. You may find inspiration or ways to interact with others. Just get out there and enjoy!
